One Mile Walks in Cumbria
One Mile Walks aims to promote walks of about a mile through towns, cities, local parks, protected landscapes and open spaces. One Mile Walks is a national campaign delivered through local activity to encourage and support people to go outdoors, get moving and to enjoy walking. It promotes multi-agency working and co-ordinated action and provides a focus and a test bed for innovation in access to walking.
In Cumbria One Mile Walks is working in collaboration with health organisations, wellbeing programmes, charities and local authorities to develop new walks, add One Mile Walks to community open spaces and highlight great places to walk. Together we will enhance existing programmes by providing more walking options and highlighting existing great places to walk.
The programme has two objectives, to get local people out walking in high population areas such as Carlisle and Barrow in Furness, and to highlight great walks in tourist hotspots, providing guidance to help visitors stray from the car parks and take in the stunning scenery, towns and villages.
